CW's Supergirl - The Review

By Marc Goode

As a long time chord cutter, my home relies on streaming services like Netflix and Hulu for our television entertainment.  In doing so, binge watching shows is a common thing for me, and this is exactly what I did with Supergirl on CW.  It is just that good.

I'll be honest, when I first started the binge on Netflix, I really struggled through the first 4 episodes.  I'm the type of person that I give a new show 4 episodes, if it doesn't hook me, I move on to something else.  Boy, am I glad that I didn't do that and gave the show one more episode.

I am one of those that is old enough to remember the theatrical release of the Supergirl (1984) movie staring Helen Slater, who plays Supergirl's Earth mom in the show.  Not only is that awesome, but they bring in Dean Cain (played Superman in the Lois and Clark) to play her dad.  I mean....shit....if CW does something, they do it right.

Anyway, back to my review.  Yes, they show is a bit tweeny and I'm a 40-cough year old, but what the showrunner is able to do is make a very compelling story, season after season.  Melissa Benoist as Kara (Supergirl) was the perfect casting choice.  She is a dynamo as both Supergirl and her alter-ego Kara.  Bringing in Mehcad Brooks to play Jimmy Olson was inspired, this guy is going to be a superstar in short time.  Rounding out the main cast, Chyler Leigh as Alex Danvers (Kara's adopted sister) is the best part of this show, and this truly saying something.  There were several times that she was able to bring a tear to my eye with her performance.

Another performance that truly makes this show special is Tyler Hoechlin as Superman.  In my opinion is, after Christopher Reeve, the best portrayal of Superman.  He plays him as he should be, not an emo, brooding Superman.  If it is possible, CW needs to do a Superman spin-off with him cast as the lead!

But what really keeps me coming back to this show and CW are their crossover episodes with The Flash, Arrow, and Legends of Tomorrow (all fantastic shows also).  They are able to start one storyline and finish it within a 4 episode, crossover arc with such ease.  If you need proof, just look at the Earth X arc, it's soooo good.

All in all, if you are a comic fan and need some good DC to watch, this is a show you need to sit down with.  You will be very entertained and it will cause you to watch CWs other awesome DC shows.
